Majorcan police believe it is yet another case of “balconing”, a dangerous game involving jumping from one balcony to another or into the swimming pool. This dangerous game has caused several deaths in Spanish holiday destinations the last few years, especially on the Balearic Islands.

This last fatal accident occurred 7.30 am Sunday morning, with a late party still taking place at the terraces of the complex in Puerto Adriano, Majorca. The life of the 26-year-old was not to be saved when emergency personnel arrived to the scene.

Spanish authorities have several times this summer issued warnings about the dangers of “balconing”.

The militant group stated that they had taken the decision to quit violence “months ago”, and that they will seek a democratic way to achieve full independence for the Basque Country.

It is not known if the ceasefire is permanent or temporary. The video where the statements were made was sent to BBC, who were the first to report this story. No reaction has been made by the Spanish government yet, but is expected later on Sunday.

The man, who allegedly has performed minor interventions on a number of patients, had fake university diplomas for medical studies on display in his clinic.

Several former patients have complained about injuries caused by the fake doctor, and the police are trying to get in touch with more witnesses as only four have been found so far.

Investigations into the case started after a television documentary on Telecinco earlier this summer, where undercover reporters visited the illegal clinic, and interviewed dissatisfied former clients.

More than 100 people drowned in Spain through the summer months this year. The majority of the victims are adults between the ages of 30 and 60, something that has changed a tendency that elderly and youngsters are the most prone to drowning.

Most drowning accidents have occurred in the coastal areas of Spain, with the region of Murcia topping the list with 23 people killed in drowning accidents this summer. Galicia follows with 17, while the Balearic Islands and Valencia each had 16 accidents.

Drownings are though not only occurring on the coasts, as accidents in rivers and lakes inland are on the rise. The inland regions of Castilla-Leon and Aragon each saw 11 drownings this summer.

The quake, which measured 7.4 on the Richter Scale, destroyed roads, wrecked building façades and disrupted power supplies. Building frontages fell onto cars, crushing them.

Authorities declared a formal civil defence state of emergency to co-ordinate recovery operations in the city, which has a population of about 350,000 people.

The city’s hospital said two men had been admitted with serious injuries, one hit by a falling chimney and the other cut by glass. It had also treated a few other people with broken bones, cuts and grazes. There are no reports of any deaths.

Police said there were several instances of looting, which had been quickly contained. In the suburbs many houses had broken windows, toppled chimneys, cracked walls and items thrown off shelves.

Power was out over a large area of the city and surrounding region as circuit breakers were tripped at substations, but was being progressively restored after safety checks. Water and sewage services were also disrupted.

The lights which will shine for 66 nights until November 7.

The annual tradition, this year performed by the Take That star was watched by approximately 15,000 people crammed into a purpose-built arena in the resort, while thousands more watched on a big screen on the Promenade.

It was the News of the World who broke the story on the day of Pakistan’s last day of their fourth test against England this summer.

The low-cost carrier Ryanair flight from Liverpool to Poznan made the unscheduled landing in the northwestern city of Bremen on Tuesday, local police said.

After the unnamed British passenger was disembarked, the plane continued with its flight. The woman was cared for at the airport and released, police say, and ended up taking a train the rest of the way to Poland.

RBS, which is 83 percent owned by the British taxpayer, released a statement to say it was cutting 3,500 jobs in administration centres across the country.

Trade unions attacked the move as a “horror story” and criticised the decision which comes on top of previous employment culls within the bank.

RBS defended the move and said it formed part of its plans to repay its bailout from the taxpayer and make its business more efficient.

RBS has shed more than 20,000 jobs since 2009. The latest cuts come on top of a decision in May to make 2,600 posts redundant at RBS’s insurance and British retail banking operations.

RBS currently employs 160,000 staff globally, most of them in the UK.

Last month, Spain’s Santander bank completed the purchase of over 300 RBS branches across the UK for about £1.65 billion (€1.99 billion).

RBS had to be rescued by the government in October 2008 after its finances were stretched by the credit crisis and its part in the disastrous acquisition of Dutch bank ABN AMRO in 2007.

The bank was propped up with 20 billion pounds of taxpayers’ money, causing the eventual resignation of then chief executive Sir Fred Goodwin, who helped preside over an aggressive acquisition policy that included the 2000 takeover of NatWest.

At $24 (€18) per share, the deal represents a 46 per cent increase to Burger King’s share price when compared to that before news of talks between the companies emerged.

Prior to details of the deal being made public on Wednesday, shares in Burger King were down more than 31 per cent since the end of 2008. McDonald’s shares were up nearly 18 percent over the same period.

Burger King is the US number two fast food chain. The company has trailed in the behemoth industry behind McDonald’s as its key customer base suffers a deeper and broad ranging negative effect from the recession and associated high unemployment rates.

Expert analysts have suggested that the takeover will enable Burger King to make the major changes to its business that are necessary to make in improvements.
